Alison was the youngest of four daughters to George and Betty Brooks born on the 28th February 1955. She had a very happy childhood playing in the nearby Taunton Green Playing Field and on one occasion falling in the stream, which her Mum (Betty Brooks) had told her to keep clear of but returned home dripping wet. Holidays consisted of trips on the train to local seaside resorts, staying in caravans in places accessible by train as Ali's Dad, George was a train driver and got free travel.

She attended two schools, St Andrew's School and Bishop Fox's Girls Grammar School. She worked at Goodman's Stationer and Marks and Spencer as a teenager. At this time she joined Temple Methodist Youth Club which is where she met Bill... who had a car and took her and two friends home after club. After a couple of years of courting, Bill and Ali got married at St Andrew's Church on November 29th, 1975. Their reception was at Farthings Hotel in Hatch Beauchamp and their honeymoon in Stratford-Upon-Avon.

Their first house was 39 Portman Street where they undertook a huge amount of renovation. So good was their work that, when the house sold recently in 2020, it still had many of the features they had put in.

Following O and A-levels, Alison started work at County Hall and took more qualifications, starting a job as Office Manager at The Castle Secondary School. This was quickly curtailed as Carolyn was born in June 1979 shortly followed by Nicola in April 1982. In 1985 they moved to 13 Draycott Avenue.

Alison's career continued including work as a Tupperware agent, shelf stacking at Sainsbury's, as the first Church Secretary of St Andrew's Church, followed by 28 years as the school Secretary of St Andrew's School.

As the children grew, holidays included caravans, the joys of Eurocamp in France and self catering houses. In 1993, Bill and Alison bought their trailable narrowboat, Tophyl of Taunton, which gave them over 30 years of enjoyment, meeting many new friends who shared their passion for boating.

Alison loved socialising and a big part of this was playing with the Unicorn Badminton Club where she remained in the A-team for longer than she thought she should! Ali brought her organising skills to the fore, helping coordinate the twinning with a club in Lisieux in Normandy, France which remained active for 30 years until Covid.

After retirement from the St Andrew’s School office Ali gave her time freely to the Taunton Foodbank as Secretary to the Trustees. She found this role fulfilling in so many ways.

In recent years, Bill and Alison welcomed four grandchildren, Evelyn, Millie, Callum and Sophie, all of whom brought joy to Alison as she watched them grow.

Throughout Alison's life, Bill was a constant and loving presence and they were a loving and devoted couple for 49 years of marriage.

Alison was a life-long member of St Andrews Church, passionately fundraising as her mother had before her, running Sunday school and playing in the music group. It is impossible to imagine her Service of Celebration being held anywhere other than St Andrew's Church, where we will commemorate her life at 1.30 pm on Monday 29th July.

I grew up from birth, with Alison as my nextdoor neighbour. I remember playing with nicola while Alison always made sure we had food and drink. Alison took me to Sunday school and was always there for me through life's ups and downs. She always had encouraging words when things were tough. She really was such a wonderful person with a heart of gold. Alison always put others first, ensuring everyone around her was happy. Alison has passed her legacy onto her children who are also amazing women who will always help anyone in need, who are strong and resilient. I'm so glad I got to meet Ali and have her in my life and she will be so so missed.

We first met Ali and Bill in 1995 in Southampton. They were stood next to our boat when we were waiting to board a ferry to cruise the French canals.
"We've got one of those " was their greeting and the rest is history.
We have, over the years, spent many weeks cruising with Ali and Bill, sharing meals, chatting about our families and anything and everything else as we walked along canal towpaths and setting the locks.
Ali was a wonderful friend, a caring lovely lady who always had a smile on her face. We will miss you Ali.

I have so many good memories of our years together at St Andrews school. We performed a play together in French, which was recorded to show how well 10yr old could do in French. Our friendship continued at Bishop Fox's. Alison often stayed at my home in the holidays where we spent hours playing '2ball' and 'twang', and making cakes and biscuits (and a lot of mess ! ). We also spent a lot of time playing tennis on the courts near Alison's home,so much time that we were often given the court for free !
One of my fondest memories is sitting in our form room at lunchtime, listening to Alison and Sarah Appleboom play their guitars and sing together. 'Streets of London' was the class favourite. Alison taught me to play the guitar, with great patience, but I never really excelled at it.
When we left school we still met up at lunchtimes as I was working in Debenhams offices, opposite County Hall.
I can honestly say my childhood and teenage years would not have been the same without Alison in them.
Rest in peace my bestest school friend.

It's a few years since I saw Alison and sadly, even though we were cousins, I didn't really know her. It is wonderful reading so many messages from people who did know her well. She was obviously a kind, generous, friendly woman, just like her mum. It is clear she will be missed.
I'm sorry that we can't attend the funeral, but we will be praying for you all and will watch the recording.
Love to all.

I have only known Alison for a few years. She was always willing to help and encourage you with the IT safeguarding. Very appreciative of any help required for St. Andrew`s. A lovely person to have around, who will be greatly missed.

Alison was amazingly loving and good with people, a community-maker, always calm with you, practical, helpful and ready to make things better and the world a happier place. I remember her skills and the ease with which she switched tasks: guitar-playing, sorting out a date clash, advising about an IT matter (where Bill sometimes rescued me); coping with all that safeguarding tasks required of her and us at St. Andrew's, and being optomistic and sure we'd find a through the paper work; seeing her on her bike or walking the Canal path; waving to one in town; just being friendly and smiling. She loved her family and she loved the way her Dad and I had chatted and recorded some of his memories.I give great thanks for all she has given so many with that love and unselfishness.
