Ente Mashe (My Mashe)
Mashe -
This is what Sudhir and I used to call each other during our regular phone calls and when we met.
In Malayalam it means Teacher, but more widely can be used as a term of respect and friendship.
We have been friends for over half our lives. It was a chance meeting initially.
I was working as a Paediatrician in a private hospital at Mavelikara, my home town in Kerala .This is also Lekha’s home town. When Sudhir finished his training at PGI Chandigarh, he joined as my successor and I handed over charge to him. He knew me as Das then. Our paths did not cross for several years as he went to Oman. There he met these wonderful bunch of friends, including Santosh, who is my classmate from college days and who knows me as Bhadra. In their conversations my name had cropped up, but it took some time to register that Bhadra & Das are the same person!
We reconnected in the UK and our family also became members of this lovely extended family.
Sudhir was the common link between all of us. In a distant land our friends become our family.
This friendship has grown over the years. We have met in each other’s houses, gone for trips, holidays and walks .We have held get-togethers, parties ,enjoyed many experiences and shared our joys and sorrows.
Our children have grown up, gone to University, met partners, are getting married and the bonds between friends remains strong.
I always remember :
- Sudhir’s smiling face ,his sparkling eyes and his luxurious moustache !
- His unique collection of hats, caps and headgear!
- Sudhir clicking away on his trademark camera with multiple lenses to get the best picture (he always carried a proper camera, no Smartphones for him!)
- Sudhir lying curled up on a sofa (churndu kedakkuva) during our sleepovers- this was his favourite position !
- He was one of the first to wake up at home and make tea, Idli & Sambar for breakfast
- I can recall our lazy morning walks to collect the Sunday newspaper
- During Covid times I remember sharing recipes when we experimented with cooking (his Macher jhol & Potol curry are trade mark items).
- We shared our gardening efforts too and the joys of growing our first vegetables.
The memories are innumerable.
I admire his courage in changing career midlife from Paediatrics to become a GP and making a great success of it .
I was inspired by his hard work – all the locums and out of hours work he did , and wondered how he managed it all .
But he had time for everything – always calm and smiling, always approachable.
He was a fountain of knowledge , be it politics, sports, books, movies, shares , gadgets and technology
In addition to being a workaholic , he was a shopaholic too!
He would drop into various Supermarkets and buy random things or more recently order them online!
He & Lekha have filled their house with all sorts of gadgets . New things still keep turning up in their cupboards at regular intervals!
Probably only he knows the uses of many of those items!
Above all he was a wonderful human being, generous, kind , humble and so unassuming.
I admire his courage and dignity in difficult times, and he always put his family and others first.
As a son, brother, husband, father and friend, Sudhir has touched so many lives in so many different ways and left a lasting impression.
The Gods take their beloved ones early, leaving the rest of us behind but your memories will always remain in our hearts.
We have been blessed and honoured to call you as our friend.
Alvida dear friend, my Mashe.
