It is with great sadness that the family of Mr Tony Brookes announces his passing on June 10th 2024, at the age of 79.
Tony will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 55 years, Joy, and his sons Andrew, Paul and Steven, his Daughter-in-Law Hazel and his five grandchildren Ethan, Hayden, Jacob, Harper and Georgia.
Born in Tharston in 1944 to May and Cyril Brookes, Tony was the middle of three brothers; Malcolm, Anthony (Tony) and Philip.
He attended Tharston Primary School and then moved to Diss High School, catching the train from Tharston Station each day. He was also a member of the choir at Tharston Church where his parents were very active worshippers.
He joined the Norfolk Education Service from school and then moved to Depwade (later South Norfolk District Council) to become a Local Government Administrator, where he stayed until his retirement in 1995. He then returned to studying and obtained both a Bachelor and Masters Degree from the Open University.
He always loved sport and continued to play both Saturday football for Hempnall, and Sunday League for a number of different clubs until into his forties. On retirement from football he discovered a love for running and, for a number of years, was a member of Wymondham Athletics Club. He competed in the first Norfolk Marathon as well as a number of London marathons, and numerous other marathons, half marathons, 10k’s and 5k’s. He continued these up until his diagnosis of Prostate cancer in 2015.
During his life he was an avid supporter of Norwich City having a season ticket for many years. This passion he passed on to his sons and more recently his Grandchildren.
The Funeral service will be held at St Faiths Crematorium, Horsham St Faiths, at 12.30 on Friday 28th June and afterwards at The Black Swan Horsham St Faiths. All are welcome to attend, dress code is no black and Norwich City FC colours optional. Family flowers only. Please make any charitable donations to the Big C Appeal.
