In loving memory of Arthur Franklin who sadly passed away on 30th April 2024

Jim Smith donated in memory of Arthur

I only knew Arthur for a short time but I wish I'd known him longer. He was a fascinating man with many interesting tales and his love of steam always shone through. I will miss our chats and his dry sense of humour. Rest in peace Arthur.

Through our mutual interest in steam trains, and his long association with the Epping Ongar Railway, my family and I were firm friends of Arthur for many years. He kindly donated two Gresley coaches to the EOR, including an LNER Buffet car No 24082 (9118), which Arthur first discovered in 1969, at Old Oak Common. He held great hopes that they would be refurbished and perhaps used for passengers to enjoy cream teas.

In latter years, owing to health problems, Arthur was unable to visit the Railway, but it was wonderful to share many happy conversations talking about steam and the way forward for heritage railways. His generosity was much appreciated, and he will be remembered fondly by everyone who was fortunate enough to know him, and maintained contact with him. My family and I will miss him very much, and we shall keep him in our hearts and prayers.

Arthur was a friend, an inspiration and a guiding light with construction of steam locomotive GER 789.

During the early days of the Trust, Arthur advised me on such matters as Trust formation, constitutions et al.

Arthur's enthusiasm and passion to preserve Essex's railway heritage was profound; to such an extent that he owned two 1930's wooden bodied railway carriages.

Above all else, Arthur was a true and loyal friend both to me and The Holden F5 Steam Locomotive Trust and will be greatly missed by me and many more besides.

Arthur may have passed, but his legacy continues,

Steve Cooper,
Chairman,
The Holden F5 Steam Locomotive Trust.
