Peter Lee was born in south London on 6th June 1929 to Frank and Minnie Lee, one of five children. His childhood was spent mostly in London, although during the war he was evacuated and spent time in Dartmouth, Devon which he loved.
At age 18, he was called up to do his National Service with the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. He then transferred to the Royal Signal Corps who posted him to Trieste as part of British Element Trieste Forces (BETFOR).
He married Gladys Wells on 6th June 1953 and set up home in a rented flat in Herne Hill. Richard, their first child, was born in 1956. In 1958 Peter and Glad bought their first house and moved to Swanley in Kent. Rob was born at home in 1959.
Peter used his national service training to get a clerical job at the Credit Lyonnais in the City of London. He moved to the Bank of London and South America (BOLSA) in 1963, which eventually became Lloyds Bank International. He retired from LBI in 1987 to spend more time in his garden, playing golf and travelling.
After retirement, Peter and Gladys move to Chestfield, Kent. They made many good friends there among their neighbours and at Chestfield Golf Club where Peter was a regular and enthusiastic player.
In later years, they moved to Hythe in Kent and finally in early 2020 to Saltwood Care Home where Gladys passed away in May 2022. The family would like to thank the staff of Saltwood Care Home for their kind attentions to Peter and Gladys over the years.
Peter is survived by his sons Richard (Ann Richards) of Toronto, Canada and Robin of Hythe and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his twin Betty and siblings Brian, Joyce and Norman.
A service will be held at Hawkinge Crematorium on Thursday, 6th June 2024 at 12:30pm followed by a celebration of life at the Red Lion Inn in Hythe. Please contact the family if you would like to attend. Donations to Blesma, The Limbless Veterans would be appreciated in lieu of flowers.
