In loving memory of Wendy Bertie who sadly passed away on 23rd March 2024.
Wendy was born in Carlisle 28th February 1946 to Jack and Margaret. Wendy is sister to Anne, Jane, Mary, Stuart and Jim. With Jack serving in the RAF the family moved around a lot, and have lived as far a field as Singapore Cyprus and Malta, and in the UK from Catterick to Chivenor.
Wendy joined up and served in the WRAF where she met Ching and they then married and Ching was posted to Cyprus, which is where Tina was born.
Upon return to UK Andrew was born, and Ching took a job overseas and the family moved out to Zambia travelling to Malawi and Zimbabwe for holidays.
Wendy worked for Mitsubushi in Lusaka, where she managed the office until her return to UK, where she transferred to the London office, having a successful career in the nonferrous metals department, becoming manager until her retirement.
It was at Mitusbushi that she met co-worker Tony who lived on Canvey with his 3 children, Darryl, Steven and Wayne, and the famlies joined together with Wendy Tina and Andrew moving to Canvey, and they married in July of 1981.
After retirement, Wendy and Tony developed a love of carp fishing, and spent many a weekend travelling to lakes around the country in search of the big one!
As the grandchildren arrived, Tony's love of West Ham infected everyone, and season tickets and travelling up and down the country with various grandchildren in tow to support the Hammers became a way of life for many happy years, with Wendy (to the surprise of everyone) becoming a passionate supporter, sitting up till the wee small hours on deadline day, and always the first in line when the new kit came out!
Her grandchildren were her life, and she was a loving caring nanny, and she was a very central part of their lives.
Sadly Tony died unexpectedly in March 2021, which was devastating for everyone, and something Wendy never came to terms with, and she was supported by the children and grandchildren.
Wendy was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer in August 2023, which she bravely dealt with along with a very complicated infection. Wendy showed such resilience and bravery and took each day as it came.
She was surrounded by her children and grandchildren as she fell asleep peacefully on 23 March 2024. May she rest in eternal peace, pain free and finally reunited with her beloved Tony.
