Funeral Director
Leslie Barrie Cooper, known as Barrie, died 12th February 2024 aged 87 years. The funeral service will be held at Wilford Hill crematorium on 13th March at 11am.
Barrie was born to Wilfred and Ada Cooper on 16th April 1936 and had one younger sister Jill. For most of his life Barrie lived in West Bridgford, although the first 20+ years of his married life to Jean were lived in Bramcote once he finished his National Service.
All of Barrie’s working life was spent in the printing trade starting off at Boots Print where he met his wife Jean Rose Raynor. They had 2 children, Beverley and Ian, 4 grand-children, Hannah, Jennifer, Brandon and Lemuel, and 1 great grandchild Elijah.
He was never someone who sat back and did nothing. When Barrie was younger he played football for local teams and was an FA Referee for many years afterwards. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in West Bridgford for over 40 years and an active member of his local Probus group until his untimely death.
When Barrie retired at 65 years he became associated with the local Conservative Party. He then served West Bridgford as a County Councillor and Gamston as a Borough Councillor for many years. Barrie also became Mayor of Rushcliffe on 2 separate occasions.
Through these various associations he attended many civic events and functions, even going as far as attending a garden party at Buckingham Palace and being introduced to HRH Prince Philip at a one day cricket match between England and New Zealand.
He supported many charities including The Friary Drop-In Centre for the homeless and was always willing to help where he could.
Barrie was always a true gentleman and will sadly be missed by everyone who knew him.
