Bio - Patricia Perkinton -2.3.40 – 22.2.24
1940 - Born , Patricia Margaret Stirling, in Argyle Street on 2nd March 1940, during
World War II, to parents John and Theresa. Soon to join her were brother Jack -
and sister Agnes, now sadly deceased. Pat grew up in Pollock
with her family, a family who were to remain at the heart of Pat’s life as the years
passed.
1955 - After leaving school in 1955, Pat started working and became an
accomplished window dresser, designing eye-catching product displays and store
layouts. This eye for design was to follow Pat throughout her life when she
subsequently owned and ran her own Art Gallery in Durham in the North East of
England and then, after returning to Glasgow in 1988, becoming manager of the
Marie Curie Cancer Care charity shop in Hyndland for over twenty years. A
significant and long-standing friendship was to start in Pat’s teenage years, with
‘Anna’ – and this was a friendship which was to last over 60 years and
that Pat cherished right up until her death.
1960’s - Pat married her beloved husband , David (sadly deceased in 2018) in 1962
and to follow came their four precious children, Karen born in 1963 – sadly deceased
in 2011- Sandra born in 1965 -here with us today – Adam born in 1967 – sadly
deceased in 2017- and Michael, born in 1971 -here with us today. All four children
started life in Glasgow, however in 1971, Pat & David moved to Durham in the NE
England and began bringing the family up in the most beautiful of settings.
Throughout their lives, Pat supported all four of her children throughout their lives,
always celebrating their achievements and milestones with great love, admiration
and pride.
1970’s - During these years in Durham, as well as bringing up her four children with
David, Pat tapped into the extremely caring and compassionate side of her nature.
She became an auxiliary nurse in the local hospital and then became a counsellor
for ‘RELATE’, a job and vocation which lasted many years and allowed Pat to
support and listen to some of those who needed help the most in her own
community.

Following her years as a counsellor, Pat set up, and ran her popular ‘Saddler Art
Gallery’ in the cobbled streets of Durham City, serving the local community with the
works of local artists and those further afield – including of course, lovely works of art
by her artist husband David. Pat loved immersing herself within the different
artistically minded populations in Durham, including that of local artists, the clergy in
the Cathedral and the university population. These years in Durham with the family
and the gallery were some of Pat’s happiest.
1990’s - In 1994 Pat’s first grandchild, James – here today- was born, whom she
was to love and support right up until her death. James’ partner, Gabby – here today-
was also a source of warmth and comfort to Pat. During these years, Pat warmly welcomed
her daughter in law, Karen (married to Michael) and son in law, Mark, (married to Sandra) to
the Perkinton family, who both offered support to Pat over the years.
A return to Glasgow occurred at the start of the 90’s when David took a new job and
a new era started. Pat became involved in working with the Marie Curie Cancer Care
shop in Hyndland in 1994, serving the local community to support cancer care in the
region, working her way to becoming manager and winning a national award in 2004
for ‘Manager of the year’. As always, Pat had devoted her time in supporting a cause
and a charity which had supported her own mother during her late-stage cancer
care. Pat spent several years supporting the shop and the local community through
her good work in the shop.
2000’s - in 2007, Pat’s second grandchild, Sam – here today - was born and then in
2008, Neve – her third grandchild was born, again, both much loved additions to the
family.
In 2011, Pat’s first child, Karen died tragically from brain cancer and then in 2017,
her son Adam, tragically died from heart failure. Pat was never to recover from the
tragedy of both of her children dying at such a young age. In 2018, Pat’s beloved husband David died.
In 2022, Pat suffered a life changing fall at home which rendered her immobile for
many months and in a lot of pain for the rest of her life, however, her strong spirit,
family support and unfaltering faith in God saw her through this troubled time.
Pat was fortunate to have the love and support of all of her family throughout recent
years - from her children, grandchildren, brother Jack and his family, and from her
brother in law, Paul and his family. Also from lifelong friends, Anna and Margaret.
Pat’s legacy is one of compassion, caring and courage in the face of all the adversity
she faced in her life. Right up until her death she was still keen to go out and face
the world, becoming a member of the Fred Paton Day Centre. Pat’s deep faith in
God and her daily prayers gave her the will to go on and to face her own death with
humility and bravery. She will be very missed in this life.
