Aside from his love for athletics, John was passionate about all sports. He loved football, cricket, tennis and encouraged a love of sport in his children and grandchildren. He loved music, especially classical, brass bands and Frank Sinatra. He also loved to play these on the piano. He was always the first to tell a joke or funny story often at the head of the table with glass of wine in hand.
