Funeral Director
Alan Bartrop, aged 96 years old, passed away in his sleep on Friday 19th January 2024.
Alan was born on 16th November 1927 in Ecclesall, Sheffield to Jack (John) and Mary Ada. He had five siblings: Colin, Pat, Terry, Mary and Jack. With his thirst for learning and intelligence, he was able to secure a spot at the Firth Park Grammar School for Boys. In 1946, he joined the Royal Navy as an Air Mechanic and soon became a Lead Electrician's Mate. He travelled around the world as part of the post-war victory parades, which he enjoyed thoroughly. After marrying Mary Lamb and the birth of his son Tony in 1952, however, he discharged himself from the Navy and enlisted in the Royal Fleet Reserves.
Alan joined BP, which was to become his employer until he reached retirement age. He was involved in the engineering of a number of BP platforms, which he was extremely proud of.
Mary and Alan separated, and in 1983 he met Jennifer, who would be his spouse until his death. Alan's house on Beacon Road in Chatham soon became a family home for him, Jennifer and her daughter Sabrina. In 1989, they welcomed Charlotte into the world. As Alan was already retired, he was able to dedicate his time to taking care of both Sabrina and Charlotte. He enjoyed crosswords, listening to classical music, reading (newspapers and books) and looking after the many pets the family shared.
Alan was predeceased by his Mum, Mary Ada; his Dad, Jack (John); his sister, Mary; and his brothers, Colin and Jack. He is survived by his wife, Jennifer; his children, Tony, Sabrina and Charlotte; his sister, Pat; his brother, Terry; and his grandson, Ambrose.
Even at the end, Alan regularly expressed his love for his family and always had a smile for the nurses who looked after him.
A funeral service will be held at Medway Crematorium on 19th February 2024 at 11am, followed by a wake at The Orchard, Spot Lane in Maidstone. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Marie Curie and Salivary Gland Cancer UK, organisations close to Alan's heart.
