In loving memory of Arthur William Herring who sadly passed away peacefully on Tuesday 16th January 2024.
Much loved husband of Maureen for more than 63 years, Dad to Sue and David, father in law to
Debbie. Grandad to Lewis, Josh, Bradley, Ryan and Rory.
Arthur was born and bred in Norwich. He spent his entire working life in local shoe factories and
was very well known in the Deaf and Hearing community as having a very strong passion for sport
and competing in it.
This started in his school days with field events like running and football. He also played table
tennis from the age of 14. Arthur continued to play competitive football, including Sunday League
football until he hung up his boots aged 39. During this time he played competitive table tennis in
the Norwich Leagues at least twice a week, also competing in many Deaf Competitions in the East
Anglian area. He played lawn Tennis locally and won at Deaf Wimbledon twice! Whilst competing
in these other sports, he continually played competitive table tennis until the age of 63.
Arthur then went on to play lawn bowls & short mat bowls competitively until aged 86.
He was a member of the Deaf Sea Anglers, who fished and competed at many venues across
Norfolk and Suffolk, when he wasn’t playing other sports he enjoyed sea fishing from the beach or
boat.
He never considered being profoundly deaf as a disability and whilst being extremely competitive
his main objective was to be part of and compete in Deaf Sports. Equally, he enjoyed being part
of hearing teams, taking great pleasure in winning, where he gained an awful lot of respect.
Arthur captained many teams over the years in both deaf and hearing clubs and won a lot of
trophies for his achievements.
He was also one of the founder members of the Bluebird Deaf Water Ski Club which was formed
in 1965. Through the years he enjoyed water-skiing and teaching others, which was always part of
his life. In the late 70’s he was part of the crew when they competed in races across the English
Channel. Through his later years until he passed, he was the Clubs Vice President.
Since Arthur left school, he was a life-long fan and season ticket holder of Norwich City Football
Club and attended many matches through the years that he thoroughly enjoyed, and had many
friends. He also took great pleasure in watching and following other sports like football, tennis,
snooker, boxing and wrestling.
Arthur was very sharp witted and had a great sense of humour with an infectious laugh. He will be
sadly missed.
Arthur Herring Celerbration of Life (Funeral) is to take place at St Faiths Crematorium, 75 Manor Rd, Horsham St Faith, Norwich NR10 3LF on Friday 16th February 11:30am, followed by a wake at Sprowston Sports & Social Club Blue Boar Lane, Norwich

I met Arthur when transporting him back and forth for renal treatment. We would spend our time signing and he would help me with that. Arthur's laugh brightened my day. He was amazing.
