Ray McGill (20 Apr 1934 - 9 Jan 2024)
Funeral Director
In loving memory of Ray McGill who sadly passed away at home in Lascelles Hall on 9th January 2024.
Ray was born in 1934, to TD and his mother Mary, who passed away when he was just 10. He had four elder brothers, Doug, Ken and Neville who remained close all their lives.
After attending Worksop College, and two years of National Service, he trained as a tailor, opening a shop in Stocksbridge which he ran till he retired in 2000.
He married Julia in 1962 and had two children, Linda and Paul who looked after him full-time in his last month. Ray was the longest - serving member at Woodsome Hall Golf Club having joined in 1946. He was a passionate golfer with eight hole-in-ones and numerous trophies to his name. He continued playing all his life, shot 74 when he was 79 years old, and his last hole-in-one was just two years before his death when he was 87.
He was charming, convivial and looked after his many friends. Anyone who met him was struck by his sense of decency and humour. He will be much missed.
He is survived by his wife, Julia, Linda and Paul, and seven grandchidren.
A Memorial will be held at Kirkheaton Parish Church at 12noon 8th February and afterwards at Woodsome.
