Dear Anna, Jeff, Alex, Gemma, Seán, Saoirse and Ciarán,
Our condolences to you on the loss of an incredible man, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. This is a deep loss for all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
My early memories of Uncle Joe are more about how he made me feel than anything else. Back then, my experience of the "grandparent generation" seemed to be that they were a little less involved with us kids than today's more "hands-on" approach. Of course, Uncle Joe was the exception. From the moment I would walk in to his home, he would make me feel like I was the most interesting 5 year old in the world. He'd excitedly sit with me at the organ and teach me a song or two. He'd take me out in the garden to encourage me to do a headstand, something I never managed to figure out, yet he executed it effortlessly!
Seeing him up on stage with the rest of A.M. Crusade at various Goan dances was something I looked forward to, not just because I liked to dance, but because I felt inspired. The talent on that stage was outstanding and even though I was young, I saw enough behind the scenes work to realize how much effort Uncle Joe and the band put in to make those dances so memorable for everyone. As dad mentioned, Uncle Joe would always make a special effort to play our favourites too! That A.M. Crusade album immediately became one of my son's favourites last summer and has clearly inspired yet another generation.
We all feel so blessed to have known such a kind, patient and full of life man. Rest in Paradise Uncle Joe.
