Things that I will always remember about uncle John that I will always remember includes:
1. Whenever I asked 'How are you feeling uncle John?'
He would answer 'Not bad, not bad. Can't grumble.' Or words to that effect. I cannot ever remember hearing him negatively complain about anything.
2. Gosh, that all emcompassing big warm smile or laugh of his. He wore it like a 'badge of honour'.
3. The fact he contributed to the building / maintenance of something around Bow area. Was it a bridge? I cannot fully remember now. I wish I'd written it down when he'd told me, to record some of 'dad's' achievements here in UK as part of the legacy he would leave behind.
4. The weeks we spent in Jamaica in about 2003. Uncle John was in his elements and enjoyed taking us out and about and pottering around on their land. He loved that there was always something outdoors in good weather to do in Jamaica ..... However, the story of the crab in the pail (bucket) still cracks me up to this day. It is something really hilarious, and evocative of uncle John, that my children and I share in common with both Uncle John and Aunt Dell.
5. Uncle John, jovially reminding me about that suit, purchased especially to be a stand-in 'dad' to me. I think he treasured that role and I cherish it.
6. Sister, auntie, cousins etc... Veron Rosemarie Cousins, who passed in May 2023, loved her uncle John. I recall in March 2020, she followed up on one of my visits asking whether uncle John recognised me. Following a phone call from Aunt Dell in February that year, she was wondering whether to visit or to remember him as he was.
I am grateful for the impact and many lasting memories of Uncle John.
Uncle John was blessed with 92 fruitful years. His soul is now resting in perfect peace and so it should be.
Thanks be to God.
Amen.
