In loving memory of Stephen Charles Payne who sadly passed away on 25th October 2023 from cancer at the age of 61.
Our dad was an amazing man. A loving father, grandfather, brother, uncle and devoted to his lifelong partner Alison of which they spent 38 years together.
Dad was a quirky character that loved to express himself largely through his hair and clothes. He was at his happiest when dancing the night away always being the last one standing.
He was a selfless man and would go above and beyond to help others. He loved family and always said that he chose quality time with family over money. This is what mattered to him and meant that our childhood was filled with many memories of days out, playschemes, and gatherings with his friends. He was a very active volunteer at our primary school alongside both of his grandchildren's schools, and was known as the cool grandad!
Dad was an advocate for recycling and minimising waste, and loved a stroll in the park to feed the foxes and birds!
He truly was a family man and the head of ours. Upon his diagnosis of cancer he fought bravely and vowed to live on in mum's memory. Dad never gave up, ever.
He will truly be missed by all and we welcome you to remember Steve and attend his funeral on Monday 13th November if wished. Alternatively we will return to The Pommelers Rest Wetherspoons on Tower Bridge Road for the wake from 13.30pm and welcome anyone to join. Please feel free to wear something inspired by dad, whether a full mod outfit or a simple slogan t-shirt.

I love you dad and will miss you for the rest of my life ❤️

So sad to hear of your passing, Steve - taken too soon. I have so many lovely memories of us all - birthdays, Christmases and family events. You always made me feel welcome and for that I am eternally grateful.

Steve, you were the coolest chain dangling- quiff sporting- slogan wearing - music loving - unique uncle in the world. I told everyone about my punk uncle growing up and my friends thought you were amazing. You were unapologetically yourself, and in that you were an inspiration. I will miss your humour and hugs xxx

First one and last on the dancefloor. Looking after Alyson took its toll. He was a fantastic carer. But he got back into life after his beloved Alyson passed away and started using a tablet and spending time again with Lara, his granddaughter. Now he is hand in hand with Alyson Strictly dancing the last Waltz together.
The gentle giant I had to look up to will be sadly missed, but with Alyson by his side again. XXX

  • Steve, your passing hurts me a lot. What a character, I always enjoyed your company. Your depth of knowledge and understanding of the world was a pleasure to watch. Not only did you give to everyone, you allowed me to have your daughters hand in marriage which I am truly grateful. You made a real impact on my life and I still can't believe you're not with us anymore. I will miss you so much. Don't worry, I will look after them all, I promise xxx
