In loving memory of Enid Dorothy Roberts who sadly died on 14th August 2023.
Mum was the youngest of three children born to George and Annie Dainton in Turleigh, near Bradford on Avon, Wiltshire, on 8th October 1924. She had a brother, Courtney, born in 1920 and a sister, Constance, born in 1923.
She attended Winsley C of E School and then gained a place at Fitzmaurice Grammar School, Bradford on Avon, where she excelled at sport, playing both cricket and hockey and competing in athletics for the school teams.
At 16, she trained at a Cambridge University and Bristol University as a prerequisite to working at Porton Down Research Establishment as part of the war effort.
After the war, she returned to Turleigh, acquiring a job with the Tax Office in Bath. This is where romance blossomed when she was asked to help train the new recruit – our Dad, Hugh! Born two days after Mum, they could hardly have been closer. They married on 8th January 1949 at St Nicholas Church, Winsley, Bradford on Avon, with snow as their confetti.
Due to Dad's work, we moved house a number of times so Mum became an expert packer and unpacker and provided a loving home for us, their family. Adrian was born in 1951 and Anne in 1955, followed by Sarah ten years later.
Mum was an excellent cook and baker and also enjoyed flower arranging and attending floral art demonstrations at her local clubs in Chippenham and Calne. Holidays were taken in a number of places in the British Isles, including, Cornwall, the Lake District and Scotland. She always took an interest in our hobbies and those of her grandchildren, Alicia, Imogen and Alex, as they grew up.
After Dad died in January 2010, Mum decided she would like a smaller home and moved to a retirement apartment in nearby Melksham, getting involved with any social activity going on there.
As Mum became increasingly frail in her early 90’s, she chose to stay in a care home in Bradford on Avon, where she had gone to recuperate after a stay in hospital. She would often comment that after so many house moves, she had never expected to end up back where she grew up. For the last two years of her life, she lived in another care home in Devizes and was well liked and cared for in both places.
Mum died on 14th August 2023, with Sarah by her side holding her hand. She had a long and happy life and we will all miss her very much
