Rydal Water, Lake District 2022. Our last ever camping trip. Incredibly hot, needed no encouragement to wild swim in that water in the background. We both loved swimming in the sea as well, at any opportunity.
Balham 1993, early days.... the little angel is Rhiannon, the daughter of Dave and Miranda, location Nick Edwards flat.We all met at Lambeth Adult Education Centre in Brixton, and we stayed in touch over the years. Only yesterday had lovely telephone calls
At Tockwith with George and Mary, and I think her friend Zoe
Penny and her mum Mary in Sheriff Hutton churchyard.Penny was a devoted daughter, and after her father George died in 1995,the house at Tockwith built by him was just too big.She moved just up the road from us in SH until her death in 2006.
November 2022, my 70th birthday,a nostalgic trip back to Brixton, where we'd met in a printmaking workshop in 1992
Staithes summer '93. Caravan holiday on cliff edge near Whitby with Penny's mum and dad, and all the family in several caravans. Wonderful, memorable, stressful(!)....
In front of our cottage in Sheriff Hutton 1995, just moved in.if I'd lived there on my own it would've stayed the same.Penny always had good ideas re maximising the space, she was brilliant at the ergonomics of interior design
When Billy was 6 months old we house sat in Tarbes SW France, feed tortoise water hydrangea etc.Travelled to nearby town, missed last train, spent night in a wooded garden of abandoned house, dry at first, starry sky, then RAIN.Luckily cardboard nearby
Paris in the Springtime Easter 92.somewhere en route to Paris from London the bus stopped for a break. We were a bit "distracted",the bus started to set off without us,fortunately a passenger noticed our absence...this proved to be fairly typical.
After we first met in 1992 a big finger pointed down from in high and said "Hey you two, get on with it! There's going to be a shortage of decent jazz guitarist/composers in 20-odd years' time..."
Our neighbour pat gave us her recliner, Penny could get sort of comfortable on it for a little bit at least, and we'd marvel at the clouds and gaze up into the birch, and savour the Daphne and Philadelphus. These were lovely moments
Penny was so determined as her mobility got worse and getting up and down our stairs became an ordeal. She made sure she damned well got out into the garden HER garden created lovingly and with great knowledge and skill over 28 years.
Throughout her illness Penny tried to keep her physical independence finding very inventive ways as her mobility got worse.Typical Penny, doing exercises holding onto a very stable chair that Mike lent us.She made me promise to carry on doing pilates
The two registrars who performed the ceremony were lovely, one of them cried. Afterwards the witnesses were joined by their partners and we went upstairs to the bedroom to celebrate with bubbly and delicious plates of food
We got married in June in our sitting room with friends Mike and Lyn and Billy as witnesses. We thought it would be just a formality but the occasion was very moving and emotional

Billy, I don't know how you managed to plan Penny's funeral with me at same time as composing beautiful special piece to be performed at it,while also nipping back down to London to record new tracks and mix for your CD in memory of mum

We always thought that Penny’s artworks of the Wolds were better than David Hockney’s! And she did them before his … So very sad to have lost ou r dear dear friend Penny. WE ALL LOVED HER.
From the edge of the hill where Penny's buried you can see south to the church at Sheriff Hutton, itself a hill village, beyond that a further 10 miles to York Minster.West of York lies Tockwith where Penny grew up.Penny loved walking on the Howardian Hills
Thankyou everyone who brought flowers to the funeral.they were exactly what Billy and me envisaged and more.Ive walked to the grave and back each day7 miles.Tho being baked dry and fading, they are still full of marvellous subtle colours. Will post close-up

Pie, I've just found this photo of one of those impromptu meetings....guess where, Waitrose. Dec 2022
Penny's defiance, bravery and feisty, often angry independence in the face of pain that was very difficult to control and dramatically affected mobility, broke my heart but inspired me to somehow find the strength I needed to care for her
This is the little sculpture,a reclining figure, that we've placed on the grave along with all the beautiful flowers everyone brought along
A sculpture from Penny I will always treasure.

Billy, you were always a wonderful son to your mother. But during her illness you performed miracles to make sure you could be with her as much as possible, and support me.
