In loving memory of John Joseph Duncan Emmett, a life well-lived and a soul deeply cherished. Today, we come together to celebrate the legacy of a man who touched the lives of so many and left an indelible mark on the hearts of those who knew him.
John's journey began in Wryly, Sheffield, born to Mary and Joseph Emmett, and the company of his older brother, Tony. Their family moved around, settling in Halifax, Whitby and Scarborough during his formative years. Eventually, John's love for adventure led him to join the sea cadets, setting him on a path to become a chief engineering officer in the merchant navy, where he spent most of his adult life.
Life's tides eventually brought him to land-based engineering, and he found himself at Southampton Central Baths and later at Pirelli until he retired.
John and Diane's marriage began on a cold December day in 1962, a union that would stand the test of time. They resided next door to John’s parents at 72d the Avenue stag gates Southampton, and their life together was one filled the busy lives of work, family and friends. They moved from the Avenue in 1994. Where John ended his time at Pirelli into retirement was not just a time of leisure for John; it was where he cared for his beloved wife, Diane Emmett. He cared for his wife along with the tight family circle and carers, family visiting, days out and family holidays created a bond that lasted through the years until his wife Diane passed away, ten years ago in the same month as John. Their home a hub of family life, where their children, grandchildren, and even great-grandchildren would come together. John's presence brought joy and laughter to all, and he cherished the time spent with his family.
That big green van of his moved every member of this family to every new home. and a few friends as well. More times that we could count. And was very much as part of the friends and family memory as John himself.
As a grandfather and great-grandfather, John was affectionately known as "big grandad" by his loved ones. He was a storyteller, regaling the younger generations with tales of his adventures and travels across the globe. The memories he shared sparked the children's imaginations and instilled in them a sense of wonder and ambition. His gifts and treasures from far-off lands inspired curiosity and appreciation for the world's diversity. Teaching his children skills, especially fishing and swimming were important. Life skills, real trades and practical knowledge.
Music played a big part in the family memory of John. Beatles, moody blues and the beach boys. Discos at the club in Hulse road. Dancing, kids skidding around the polished floors. These things lite up dads life.
Beyond his captivating stories, John had a great sense of humour. He could effortlessly mimic Mick Jagger's moves and lyrics, bringing laughter to all who witnessed his playful performances. His humour and wit, though occasionally sharp, endeared him even more to his family. Through laughter and jokes, he built a bond with his children and grandchildren that would last a lifetime.
John was a loyal friend to many. He forged strong connections with colleagues, drinking buddies, and friends from various walks of life. His loyalty was unwavering, and his presence brought comfort and support to those in his circle.
As we bid farewell to John, we acknowledge that he was not without flaws, as none of us are. But his love, care, and loyalty to his family and friends outweighed any imperfections. He taught us the value of authenticity and standing up for what we believe in. He leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter, and his memory will forever be etched in our hearts.
Rest in peace, dear John. We are grateful for the time we had with you and the love you shared with us. As we carry your memory forward, we will honour your life by embracing the adventurous spirit, cherishing our family bonds, and finding joy in every moment, just as you did.
Goodnight, Dad, Grandad, Big Grandad, Big John. May your soul find peace in the company of loved ones who have gone before you. We will miss you dearly, but we take comfort in knowing that your spirit lives on in the laughter and love you brought into our lives.
