MARY
Formerly of The Scotland Inn, and The Irish Nash, Birstall.
On 19th July 2023, at her home in Birstall, aged 86 years, Mary, beloved wife of Tom for 66 years, loving and much loved mum of Stephen and Jayne, a dear mother in law, loved Grandma and Great Grandma
Tom and Mary took their first pub, the New Inn, a pub with a tough reputation, but the regulars soon knew not to mess with the landlady and it became a thriving business with darts and dominoes teams and a football team, every new years eve people dressed in fancy dress and partied to the early hours, a tradition that continued when they moved to The Scotland where a buffet was provided for the customers by Mary. Mary was more than a landlady, she was a little woman with a big heart and looked out for people, there were always extra people for christmas dinner, she didn't like to think of anyone being on their own. She had a strong sense of right and wrong and would always offer support when needed, this extended to her constantly offering lifts to people even though she didn't drive, with the much used phrase Tom'll tek you!
Mary loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was a hands on grandma looking after them and spending time with them. Joseph was a good talker as a toddler and she used to test him by asking him to repeat long words, one day she was overheard asking him to say nymphomaniac, when asked if she knew what it meant she had no idea.
Funny, feisty, fearless, a little woman with a big heart, as many people have said over the last few days, the end of an era
