A final bow down for Nottinghamshire’s first turban wearing police officer.

The first turban wearing police officer to serve Nottinghamshire sadly passed away on Thursday 27 April 2023 following a short illness.

Manjeet Singh Matharu served the Nottinghamshire police force for over four decades, which spanned the entirety of his career as a serving officer.

As a Sikh, Manjeet’s turban was symbolic of his faith but also distinguished him from other officers when he first started serving the police force. During this time, there were no other turban wearing Sikh police officers serving the police force in the area and Manjeet was the first to hold this accolade.

Originally born in Kenya in 1954, he settled here in the UK with his family in 1972 and following a short stay in Leicester, he then resided in Nottingham. Manjeet joined Nottinghamshire police force in 1978.

Having recently retired at the end of March, following a long serving career, Manjeet holds the honour of also being third in the country for completing a staggering 45 years service to the police force.

Throughout his dedicated service to the police, Manjeet worked his way up the ranks to become a detective constable and working in MCU. He had become synonymous in the Nottinghamshire area for wearing a turban. Manjeet embraced wearing his turban on duty and stood out amongst other officers during a career spanning over 40 years.

Manjeet showed true commitment to the police force and dedicated his career to serving the local community of Nottinghamshire. He was also featured in an article in the Nottingham Post on Saturday 12th August 1978 for being the first police officer to wear a turban in Nottingham.

Sat Sri Akaal Nanaji,

“Salute Sahib”, I salute you nanaji for being the best nanaji out there. I spent every Wednesday with you and we had the beat days together. You played with me and we enjoyed ice creams together.

You always gave me one chocolate star when it was time for me to go home now, you have become the brightest and sweetest star.

You were so so proud of me when I got accepted at the High School and you always told me to work hard and make my mum and dad proud. I will make you proud and when I grow up I will tell my Veeru how special you were.

Thank you for everything and I am proud that my nanaji won hearts of lots of people including me.

Love you nanaji and Sat Sri Akaal. Have the best sleep or as you used to say two winks. 😢🙏❤️

Dearest Dad,

Dad, a simple three letter word with such a powerful impact on Sandy and I.

The heart ache we feel today is so painful and unbearable. Your smell and presence lingers in your house today.

You really were our ultimate strength and you guided us through life with immense love and positivity. You carried yourself with so much self respect and dignity and touched the hearts of everyone with your wise words and generosity. The way you dealt with tough times is admirable and you were the peace maker in times of need.

You always saw good in people and always gave people a chance. You always put everyone first even until the day you took your last meal, you shared and made sure everyone ate before you.

You fulfilled all the duties of a father and I am honoured to say I was the youngest daughter of Manjeet Matharu. Your name will live on for generations to come. I promise to make you proud and hope the love you showered us mirrors on our children.

You won my mind and heart the minute you held me in your arms. I love you dad 🙏

Love from your cheekiest daughter x 😢🙏💔

Dad,
You were my confidant, my rock, my absolute everything and now my forever guardian angel. How life will continue without you I don’t know. A sense of deep sadness and a very heavy heart looms with me today. I promise to keep you alive in our memories everyday. The legend that you were will be spoken about too. I pray that your soul rests in forever peace. Please continue to guide us just like you always did. We love you so much dad. Lots of love Sandy and Micky 💔

Nanaji,
Sat Sri Akal. Thank you for being the best grandfather to us. We will miss your big, warm hugs and the beautiful smile you had on your face. We promise to study hard, play lots of sports and continue your legacy. Rest in peace nanaji. Lots of love Harveer (Your walking sports TV guide as you used to call me) and Paranvir (your bodyguard as you used to call me) xxx

Matty, you part of the very memorable group of people from my first station, Radford Road. You will always stand out to me as being a kind and caring man, who had time to help anyone. Whenever we spoke it was pretty much a laughing session and when I saw you again after many years you hadn't changed one bit. I know you will be a great loss to your family but also a source of immense pride. You lived a good life and I offer my deepest condolences to all your family and friends.
