Sylvia was such a lovely person to know, and a very important part of Friargate Quakers. The love, time and care that she put into welcoming new people and contributing to the ongoing community was really special. We are grateful to have known her.

Many condolences to the family on the loss of Sylvia. I recall her well as Miss Beard, then Mrs Carter, who taught me piano, and A level music at Dame Allans School, Newcastle, in the late 1960s. I never practised enough, nor quite mastered Harmony, but she was patient and encouraging. And a fierce talent herself, composing original songs for the school production of ‘Mother Courage’, in which I played the title role - I often find myself singing her rousing ‘Christians awake, the winter’s gone …’ When I was an undergraduate at York Uni, she kindly invited me and my boyfriend (now husband) to visit her in Bishopthorpe, and we enjoyed a lovely afternoon with her and Andrew.

Dear Andrew Elinor and Martin

Dear Andrew Elinor and Martin

I wanted to write to say how sorry we were to hear about Sylvia’s death.
We realise she had been ill for a long time and we have kept up with the situation through Denise and June. (We still meet from time to time as Chapter House Elderly Ladies.)

We hope that now Sylvia is at peace you can all think about yourselves as your selfless care has been an inspiration to us all.

Sadly we will be away in Edinburgh on Friday 19th visiting our son Adam and his wife Laura. However we will be thinking about you all and the good times we have enjoyed together.

I first met Sylvia in 1973. She, and Andrew of course, have remained firm friends for many years. I will always be grateful for her friendship, generous nature and unstinting zest for life. She will be much missed. Phil and I send our sincere condolences to all the family.

Dear Andrew and family,

Sending my condolences to you all. Dear Sylvia, now at peace.

I took part alongside Syliva in choir 8 at Chapter House Choir's 40th anniversary performance of Spem in Alium. And she always came over to say hello at the BMS concerts. I'll remember her for her lovely smile.

Love from Jan xx
