In loving memory of Robin Henry Beckett who sadly passed away on 10th October 2015.
Robin who was better known as Bob was a loving husband to Mollie and father to Alison and Michael. He was also a well loved Grandfather to Helen, Christopher, Tristan and Hannah.
Bob had various jobs in his time but his main career was spent in the London Fire Service and building sailing dinghies. As a Fireman Bob did not talk much about the experiences he was exposed to however it is certain that he both helped many people and saw much sad loss of human life. However within the family he was bright and cheerful which lead to a very happy family life for Mollie, Alison and Michael.
Bob also leaves a legacy in the sailing world where he made particular design modifications to the Solo Class sailing dinghy. Modifications that are still included today in many of the wooden Solo's built today.
As a young man, Bob had many interests. He was a keen cyclist who also raced, keen swimmer who won medals, and he played waterpolo. When he was a little older and finances permitted he enjoyed sailing yachts and then as an older man, sailing model yachts at the club in Poole Park. He also developed a great interest in photography. He was always busy reading or designing something and learning something new. For his 80th birthday he bought himself an Ipad which he greatly enjoyed using.
Any donation you choose to make will be sent on to the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation (http://andrewsimpsonfoundation.co.uk/) which transforms the lives of young people through sailing. We felt this would be appropriate and that Bob would approve.

This poem was written by my uncle the late Bill Woolgar and I wanted to share it.
The Ups and Downs of Sailing – a tribute to Robin (Bob) Beckett

If you like the water, then sailing is for you
By the sea, in rain or shine, is a fun thing for one or two
The boats may not be very large, but skim across the lake,
Leaving right behind them, a phosphorescent wake.
The courses that these boats will take, are marked by numbered buoys,
And just to make it more confused, are moved by clever ploys.
A rubber boat is taken out to move these for each race,
Which can be quite unstable, if the oarsman moves his place.
So on this sad occasion, when buoys were being moved,
To make the race more complex, or otherwise improved
Our Robin went to do his best, rowing his rubber boat
And decided it was difficult, to keep this thing afloat.
He lean't too far to lift the buoy, into a different place,
And made contact with the water, leading with his face.
Quite quickly then he toppled in, and disappeared from sight,
Whilst Molly watching from the shore, had a sudden fright.
A body then emerged in view, still wearing a floppy hat,
Which hung around a gasping head, on which the boat had sat.
And slowly then from the deep, the rest of Bob came out,
But only to his upper thighs, or maybe thereabouts.
All ended well, and Bob dried off, but had no clothes to wear,
Except some oilskin trousers, which were a tatty pair.
He then drove home to West Moors, hoping no one would intrude
A policeman would have surely said “whats all this then, driving in the nude”.
Oh for the life of a sailor!
