In loving memory of Daphne Elizabeth Mills who sadly passed away on 28th March 2023.

Daphne grew up in Burham, where she stayed close to family. Following her Mum's death in 1997, she looked after her Dad until only recently, often taking him out with her on her rambles. From early childhood, Daphne loved nature and often described this passion as her greatest source of joy. She grew into a talented surveyor, identifier, collector, archivist and photographer of the natural world and made many wonderful connections and strong friendships through this pursuit. Daphne was a much respected and enthusiastic member of the Kent Field Club, as well as other nature organisations and societies. She will be truly missed by friends and family, the groups she belonged to and her work colleagues at Landscape Services, Kent County Council, who all have very happy memories of her sense of adventure and fun, her humour and sharp wit (a well developed Mills trait) as well as her kindness, loyalty and interest in others. Daphne was a much loved aunt, great aunt, great, great aunt and sister-in-law, with a fondness for family stories and research.

As a competitive bar billiards player, Daphne found local and national success in the sport, as well as representing England.

After the funeral, there will be a gathering at The Windmill in Burham to share memories of Daphne.

I worked with Daphne at Lanscape Services, we had so many laughs together, it has really made me smile thinking back to those times. A truly unique lady.

Daphne was a very good member of the team at Landscape Services. We had some laugh's when we heard about her adventure at the weekend when she was out about in the under growth.

In grateful memory of Daphne. Nothing escaped her eagle eye on field trips, and she was always glad to share her finds.

When the Kent Botanical Recording group formed thirteen years ago straight away Daphne became a great supporter, attending just about every field meeting and while she worked on improving her already considerable knowledge of wild plants, she brought along a remarkable skill for spotting and identifying anything else that might be about on the day from bugs to birds, plants to fungi, even snails and slugs. Daphne took great pleasure in sharing her discoveries and incredible wealth of knowledge and she did it always with enthusiasm and a great sense of fun. Over the years Daphne has contributed thousands of botanical records for the county, some quite outstanding and being a skilful photographer, provided many photographs to illustrate the Groups publications.
Thanks to her interest in botany, I have had the pleasure and great privilege of getting to know Daphne who has been the very best of companions on wild flower walks and along with many others, I am going to miss l her greatly.
Sue Buckingham, Kent Botanical Recording Group

I have known Daphne for getting on for 40 years and have been with her on many Kent Field Club and Shoresearch events and activities. She was a lovely person to be with with a wide ranging interest in natural history, and a very sharp eye for finding interesting species on the sand and the sea. I am very grateful for her strong support in, with Fred Booth her dear friend, marine group, later Shoresearch, activities. We had fun and also some good laughs. She will be missed.
