In loving memory of Michael Nettleton who sadly passed away on 9th March 2023.
An amazing life from being evacuated with his parents who taught in a deaf school from Glasgow to Devon during WW2. Then time served on a troop ship in the Suez for National Service. Then onto his first degree at Strathclyde University in 1953. Then a PHD Applied Physical Chemistry in 1960.A career working at Vickers, then CEGB as a research scientist which included climbing the towers at Battersea and visiting Bankside, now the Tate Modern, whenever there was an explosion at the power stations. I have fond memories of visiting his office as a child which was full of home brew he was making and plants he was growing, I am sure management did not approve!🌷He then went onto a second career, emigrating to Australia and working at Queensland University 1985- 97 Mechanical Enginering and then Chemical Engineering.
He was an incredibly resilient man, bringing up us two girls alone as our mother sadly died when we were just 3 and 8. He just got on with things, learnt how to cook, clean, garden and carried on working.I never realised how hard this was until I had my own children, especially as a single man in 70’s/80’s. He also managed to get his third degree a DSC from Strathclyde University during this time. Not forgetting writing his book, ‘Gaseous Detonations’ the title always made us giggle. Plus many other articles published in scientific journals.
He loved reading, music and debating, always loving to challenge and take a contrary point of view. He lived independently up until the last few weeks and many thanks to Marie Daniels who helped enable this, plus the kindness her family showed. He is survived by his two daughters and his two grandchildren whom I know he was fiercely proud of. He will be sadly missed. ❤️
