In loving memory of Josiah Smith who sadly passed away on 30th January 2023 Aged 92 years
Josiah , Sonny, Dad, Grandad, Grandpapa.
Dad was born in New Savannah district , Newmarket Jamaica. He was the eldest of 10 born to his parents Cornelius and Beatrice Smith. As a young man of 21 he travelled to America to pursue a better life and to support his family. He returned to Jamaica when his visa expired to apply for a new one . When he returned from America he bought land in Jamaica so his parents could build a house for the family. Whilst he waited for his visa he received his invitation to travel to the Uk so in 1955 he set off by boat to England. He always told the story of how his US visa arrived the day he left . Dad settled in the UK and met Doreen our mum. Sadly our mum passed away aged 48 years . They started their life together living in South London, Peckham, Brixton, Battersea. They had three surviving children Paulette, Jean and Simon. The family moved to Redhill when dads work brought him there and he was determined he wanted to buy his own home and provide a good life for his children. Dad worked hard throughout his life . He was a quiet private man who made an impact on anyone who met him . Dad said it as it was but was fair and measured. Someone to turn to for advise . He liked nice things and was particular about his restaurants if they didn’t have white table cloths it wasn’t up to his standards! He enjoyed the nights I took him to the Theatre, he enjoyed his Bob Marley music and before his body started letting him down he enjoyed holidays and of course the old boys night out . He will be so missed , the long chats over a coffee the long phone calls when half the time he couldn’t hear you! He was proud of the family he produced his children his grandchildren and great grand grandchildren, a true family man.
