In loving memory of Audrey 'Nina' Sansom who sadly passed away on 1st February 2023
Nina was born as Audrey Nina Ferrill, daughter to William Ferrill and Gertrude Bullivant, and younger sister to Eric and Ross Ferrill. The family lived on Russell Road in Forest Fields, Nottingham.
Nina was educated at Old Radford Trust School, Bentinck Road School and Guilford Secondary Girls School. She left school at 14 in 1941, by which time World War II was well underway. She enrolled at Gregg Business School to learn shorthand and typing before getting a job at Co-op Insurance Society. Whilst there she heard the Luftwaffe attacks on Nottingham and next day witnessed some of the damage caused by the bombs.
During the war Nina met Arthur who was home on leave from the army. They fell in love and were married on 2nd August 1947. Nina later gave birth to Roger (1948), Colin (1953), and Sharon and Glenis (1959). She started married life living in Arthur’s father's house on Wallan Street, Radford, then moved briefly to Lady Bay before buying a house on Gladstone Street, New Basford, and in 1962 they moved to 111a Berridge Road, Forest Fields, where they lived for the next 53 years before moving to Hall Park Care Home in Bulwell in 2015.
Nina had a variety of jobs during these years. She worked as a waitress at the Fox Pub on Parliament Street, a shop assistant at her brother’s hardware shop on Birrell Road, Forest Fields, before using her secretarial skills once more at Victoria School in Sneinton, Heathfield School in Basford and New Basford Primary School on Beech Avenue.
Outside of work Nina had many interests. She was a keen cyclist and youth hosteller in early adulthood. She was an active member of the Labour Party for most of her adult life, a school governor and like Arthur spent much time delivering leaflets and knocking on doors during elections. Since retirement she and Arthur spent many weekends at their caravan in Charnwood Forest and enjoyed many Mediterranean holidays. At Hall Park Care Home she was the Resident’s Ambassador.
In her later years she was an active resident At Hall Park Care Home where she was much loved by all. In 1999 she celebrated Arthur’s 100th birthday. Altogether Nina and Arthur were married for 73 Years. And just as some carers called Arthur, King Arthur, so they called Nina Queen Nina. Queen Nina passed away peacefully in the care home on 1st February, in the company of Sharon, Glenis and Colin. Thus, she became the second Queen to pass away recently at the age of 96. We all love her and miss her. May she rest in peace.
