In loving memory of Garry Richard Hirst who sadly passed away at his home in Rainham on 4th January 2023, aged 78 years. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and the local community.

He was a lively character, spontaneous and full of fun. He was kind and generous with his time, supporting those who were less fortunate. He was always happy and had a smile for everyone.

Garry was born and grew up in Northfleet Kent, surrounded by his 7 brothers & sisters and parents George and Ivy.

He was an academic, after passing his 11 plus he attended Gravesend Grammar School where he developed his passion for learning, continuing his education by completing a Diploma in Chemistry, a Diploma in Management Science before becoming a member of the Chartered Institute of Management and subsequently studying for a Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree in Science.

He loved sport, both watching and participating, and was a keen runner, walker, cyclist plus squash and badminton player.

Garry’s work career was varied working for Bowater R & D as a Laboratory Assistant, The Wellcome Foundation as a Chemical Scientist and Factory Manager. He then had a period of Self Employment as a Management Consultant before ending his career as a Postman.

His career and family took him to many different places in the UK and abroad including living in Johannesburg, whilst working for Wellcome. On his retirement he moved back to Kent to be nearer his family.

Garry was at his happiest in Rainham and loved the town and its community. Particularly enjoying being out in the town on his walks, chatting to the locals and larking about in the High Street in his self-titled role of the ‘Sheriff of Rainham’.

His funeral service will take place on Wednesday 22nd February 2023, 2.00 pm at the Garden of England Crematorium, Bobbing.

Before this, his final journey will take him along Rainham High Street, one last time, from 1.30 pm for anyone wishing to pay their respects.

Family flowers only please but donations, if desired, in memory of Garry may be made using the link above to My Shining Star a Rainham based Charity which supports children with cancer and their families, a cause which was close to his heart.

Any enquiries can be made to John Weir Funeral Directors, 130-132, high street, Rainham, Kent. ME8 8AR. Telephone 01634 373111
