In loving memory of Roy Fish who sadly passed away on 16th December 2022

A lostfriend wrote

I met Roy back in the early 80's when we became work friends, we got on really well and I got him to the music of Marillion, joking about his surname being the same as the singers nickname, he hadn't heard of them before so I recorded their albums for him and he liked them enough to name his daughter after their biggest hit, in fact all Kayleigh's are named after that song.
I took him to a few rock pubs in Bradford and we were pals for a while until we somehow lost touch.

I knew Roy had a few health issues later on in his life but he was taken too soon.

Rest in Peace Roy, I'm still a big Marillion fan (with Fish) and have followed his career ever since, so when I go see him on his farewell tour I shall raise a glass in your memory.

Fly high, fly free.

  • Hi Debra, No I don't think we have ever met. I knew Roy when he worked at Birchlands Environmental Project (gardening and landscaping) on Rooley Lane, it was around 1985 when I was about 18 yrs old, he was older than me but we got on well and he would come to my house on a Friday after work and we'd get some food and head off into town to a few rock bars that I introduced him to and of course Marillion struck a chord with him. I gave Roy a Marillion tour T shirt from the 1984 Fugazi tour, then when I got another job, we lost touch, I didn't know his address or phone number back then. I saw him many years later, not quite sure where, maybe just passing by in the city centre and that was the last time I ever saw him, I'm fairly sure we talked about another friend of ours from back then that had passed away so it would have been around 2012. If possible I would appreciate any info regarding his funeral, I'm grateful for you telling me about 'Lavender', which is fitting and made me smile, does he a final resting place? My email is thirdfish77@gmail.com if you have an order of service that you could photograph and send that would be appreciated, no problem if it's too much to ask of you. (note the fish reference in my address, it's a Marillion thing) I'm very sorry for your loss and that Roy and I never got to reacquaint again for old times sake but it's clear he made an impact on those that knew and loved him. RIP Roy.

  • Hi yeh i do remember roy telling me about a frend and I remember him doing that job. We had just met. How did you find out about him passing ? Its been a really sad time for me and his children. Today our daughter had a baby boy and I can see some of Roy in him which is comforting. He was a lovely man and its broken my heart to lose him but thank you for introducing him to marillion because he loved them and sang their songs right until the end :( funnily enough he gave that t- shirt to my eldest daughter ( is it grey?) And she wore it at his funeral. I loved him so much. Nobody could've loved him more ... If you give me your address I have some spare order of services I can send you. Kind regards Debra

  • Hi Debra, I sometimes check in on old mates to see if they want a reunion, sadly google lead me here. Yes the T shirt was grey with a Jester sat in a tv screen wearing a boxing glove from 1984 tour, it's from the song Punch & Judy, so if it is the same one then it is quite rare, a future heirloom for your family to pass down, wow I'm surprised it has lasted this long, it's 40 years old. I once cut his hair so that he had fish tales at the back and spiky on top, the daftness of youth I guess, but the 80's were like that - great times. I know it's very difficult for you all. I don't want to display my address on here if that is ok, thanks anyway for the offer. Congratulations on the new arrival, Roy will be watching over you all and he will live on in memory and through his children and his grandchildren.

  • What about I email you and you can email me back with your address ? Then its not public is it ? Its such a shame when you gone to all this trouble and I really dont mind sending you one ? Have a think about it anyway and let me know Thanks for being a good friend to him btw :) im sure he appreciated it. And he definately loved that t- shirt. He was very proud of it !!! His ashes are still at our home. Not ready to part with them yet. Debra

Roy Fish was an inspiration to many. I was privileged to work with both him and his wife Debs during my time with the national Aphasia charity, Speakability. I will always remember his dedication and commitment to supporting others who were living with the experience of stroke and Aphasia. His determination and wonderful sense of humour kept him and the rest of us able to face any challenges that came our way.
He was a brightly shining star whose memory will never dim because he brought light to others. Rest in Peace my friend.
