In loving memory of Susan Grieves who sadly passed away on 19th December 2022.

Susan Elizabeth May Duncan was born at Simpson Memories Pavilion, Edinburgh at 34 weeks weighing just 3lbs and 3ozs. She was therefore born a fighter and forever restless - knocking off her feeding tubes and poking her legs through the incubator holes.
She always looked out for her younger brother although one year her impatience led to them opening all their Christmas presents on Christmas Eve and then wrapping them back up so we wouldn't know.
Susan went to Drylaw primary school prior to moving to England aged 8 and then attending Warwick primary school and John Lea secondary school. She attended Tresham college for a pre-nursing course.
Before commencing her nursing training at Charles Frears, Leicester she worked as a dental nurse at Kingham's dental practice in Wellingborough.
Linda and Peter Duncan

Susan was a loved and loving mum, wife, daughter, sister, relative, friend and colleague to many.
She was a 5' 1" (according to her) force of nature - determined, stubborn, uncompromising, loyal, kind, caring, impatient but perfect human being who didn't take rubbish from anyone.
Continually wanting to learn and develop she would always either be studying for a qualification whilst working full time or even commuting (via plane) to jobs in 2 different countries.
It was this determination to improve that earned her the respect of anyone who worked with her.
Her career spanned many aspects of nursing - staff nurse, orthopedic nurse, midwife, research nurse, theatre nurse, nurse prescriber, prison nurse, advanced nurse practitioner, sexual health nurse and sexual assault nurse examiner before being made the Clinical Lead for Mitie in Leicester.
Despite never realistically having the time to relax, she still managed to have many friends, always be available to her family and enjoy Disney holidays to the maximum. Although, famously, her Masters dissertation was submitted 1 minute prior to the deadline after not sleeping for the previous 48 hours trying to finish it (nothing whatsoever to do with her procrastination)!
Susan was the love of my life and it will never be the same or as good without her.
Danny

Funeral Speech:

Hello Everyone and thank you for coming. For those you don’t know me my name is Jack and I have the privilege of being Susan’s son.

There’s many things I could tell you about my mum she was loyal, clever, kind and could even squeeze out jokes from time to time, but above all else she was fearless. If my mum wanted something she would go and get it. It would not matter who or what was in her way.

I can remember a fact that my mum once told me about herself. She stated that out of all the job interviews she had over her working life, she got offered the job every time. More than likely because she had more qualifications and work experience than all the other staff members combined.

My mum was terrified of flying but that still didn’t stop her from flying to and from Gibraltar twice a week. Over the course of my life I have witnessed other people thinking my mum was an easy target to push around due to her calmness and lack of height but as you can imagine she made those people turn from Bertie Big Bollocks to Timmy Tiny Testies right quick. Even her own children (especially myself) tried to get our own way. Now I can say for myself I have come face to face with people armed with knives but that still doesn’t compare to my mum when she did what we call the Bunny teeth. The Bunny teeth involves my mum going bright red, shaking her head vigorously with her front teeth biting down on her bottom lip. Even thinking about it now gives me the shivers.

But what would I give now to see that again. One last time.

My mum loved Disney so much that she was wanting to work as Mickey Mouse. She was not pleased when we stated she would be more convincing as one of the dwarfs.

I do not believe in heaven but if there is one my mum will be up there, probably telling god how to do his job more effectively.

I miss you mum, I’ll do what I can to make you proud

Thank you

In all the time that I have known Susan, she has always struck me to be one of the strongest & most resilient women I know.
courageous to a ‘T’, &
one of the smartest women by far.
She was also fearless & tenacious.

Her positive attitude & energy was both infectious as well as endearing.

She made you want to be a better person, work that bit harder & aspire to bigger & better things, due to her passion, commitment & dedication to her work/job, & in everything she did.

She was simply an extraordinary woman! And inspirational!

Her love for her family was acutely apparent & her adoration/exuberance for Disney World in Orlando was intoxicating to say the least!

I feel honoured & privileged to have met & known her in the time that I did. I am only sorry it was short lived .

Thank you Susan for accepting me into your family.
You will forever remain a constant in my memory, thoughts & in my heart.

I feel the world is a less kinder one, now that you are no longer in it.

With all my love

Teresa xxx
