In loving memory of Allan Nias who sadly passed away on 26th November 2022

Oh no, I was thinking about all my A-level teachers today (especially as it's A level results day 23 years on, and I was helping with clearing at the uni I currently work in). Was randomly googling my old A-level teachers' names and came across this. I second everything that everybody has said about Mr Nias. He was hilarious, a joy to listen to (who needs fee paying private schools when you get such excellent education at Leyton Sixth) and everybody loved him. My biology A-level had far reaching consequences- and took me through a BSc, MSc, PhD, some stints of studying and working abroad, and now a third job at a university/higher education thanks to Mr Nias' (and Ms Walsh's) instruction. I think about LSC even more now I am back in the country and only wish I had stayed in touch with these fabulous teachers. RIP Mr Nias, you are certainly not forgotten and your memory lives on in the thousands of students you taught xxx

So sad to hear of Mr Nais's passing. He was one of my favourite teachers when I did my A-level Biology (many many moons ago). Classes where fun, informative and he truly helped us develop a love for the science. and he never said anything when he saw us in the pub during lunch have a cheeky half and a game of pool, except maybe walk us back to college after he had finished his own lunch!!!

Allan was a very good friend from the time we first met at Eastleigh Tech near Southampton. We were there for A levels during 1965 to 1967 after which we both progressed to University. We kept in touch for some 4 decades then unfortunately lost touch about 10 years ago - last seeing him at a reunion (that Peter Lewis has mentioned) in Winchester. He was a warm, good-humoured and generous friend - didn't take himself too seriously. I'm not suprised at all at the lovely messages here. I really really regret not having seen him for quite a while and not knowing about his funeral. He clearly will be greatly missed by many friends.

Allan and I were best friends back in the mid-sixties when we both started A levels at Eastleigh Technical College. We were in a group of friends that had great times - then moved on for University - he in Barking (East London) and me to Lancaster. We of course kept in touch during those 3 years (1967-1970) and after that - well into the following 4 decades or so. We lost touch over the last 10 years - I couldn't find him on any sites intil I happened to check his whereabouts simply online - to learn the forrible, hateful news that he had died. He was always good-humoured, bright and iddn't take himself too seriously. Reading his ex-students comments just make so much sense. I'm very sorryI didn't know of the funeral - that's echoed by two Eastleigh A level friends. We would have liked to attend. Rest in peace Allan. You are a great loss to many many friends.

  • Great to see you on here Ms Weaver! You were an absolute inspiration too, and I used my chemistry too (PhD is in Forensic Toxicology, so chemistry A level most definitely helped). Doing Salters chemistry was a very good idea, as forensic science is very applications-based. Thank you so much for being such a fantastic teacher. I still think of my time at LSC and the teachers there very fondly xx

Allan was such a great person to know in every sense! A great boss, an excellent teacher and manager and a very funny man! I have so many fond memories of my time at Leyton and the trips we shared to Germany and Hungary on our Comenius projects. Allan was the epitome of a manager who dealt in a very calm and reassuring manner with everyone. He was never full of himself and always got the job done in his own inimitable way. He will always have a place in my heart. Such a lovely man.

I was lucky to have known Allan for 50 years. We met at The Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel both Working as Lab Technicians. We had great fun Allan was very popular with the nurses as I remember! Allan was an expert on beer his favourite being Youngs bitter. I left to train to be a teacher in 1971.Allan decided to become a teacher too. We both ended up teaching at Leyton Sixth Form College. I joined him in 1978 having stayed in contact learning about his new girlfriends and many numerous adventures.Allan was a great Biology teacher the staff and students loved him. He was kind and funny he had a great way of amusing his students and sung his way through the kerbs cycle to teach his A level students who could probably remember that to this day! Allan always went the extra mile to help anyone he really was a great friend and teacher RIP Allan will never forget you

I first met Allan when I joined Leyton SFC in 2000 as a Biology teacher. He was my line manager as firstly Head of Biology and then Head of Science (roles that I took over later when Allan retired and returned for a few years to teach part-time. He was a truly inspirational A level teacher and taught me to teach to the exam. His lessons were sprinkled with jokes and anecdotes and was loved by his students. He was very supportive as my manager and a good friend. We shared a love of football and Allan, who was a lifelong Portsmouth fan, always used to place a bet on them to be relegated each season creating a win-win scenario as obviously he preferred them to stay in the Premier League! So many happy memories of a generous and warm-hearted man. It was a privilege to work with him - one of the very best teachers that I have encountered in my teaching career. RIP Allan - He will never be forgotten by those who worked with him or were taught by him)

Allan Nias was a towering influence on my teaching career. My first mentor and Head of department. Affable with amazing ability to even predict external exam questions. He always had a beer story to lighten the mood when the pressure was on. A consummate professional who was dedicated to one institution for most of his working life. Teachers of his calibre are sadly a dying breed. Thanks for the memories Allan. Rest in Perfect Peace.
