In loving memory of Andrew James Digwood who sadly passed away on 6th November.
A special service will take place at York Minster on the 24th of November at 10.30am.
Friends and colleagues are invited to join his family in celebrating Andrew’s life. The service will be followed by refreshments at the Merchant Adventurers’ Hall, where Andrew was a proud member of the Company. All who knew him and feel they would like to attend will be made most welcome. To help us keep track of numbers, please follow the instructions under the Attend Funeral tab on this page.
On the day of his funeral, York Mansion House’s flag will be at half mast as a sign of respect. A rare honour normally reserved for serving Councillors and Aldermen: A testament to Andrew’s standing and recognising his contribution to York.
The reception at the Merchant Adventurers Hall will be followed by a smaller ceremony for close friends and family at York Crematorium at 3:00pm.
Whilst Andrew's illness came as a huge shock to us, in his final weeks, he had an opportunity which is denied to many people; to reflect upon the life he had lived and remember fondly the people he had met. There were no grudges, no frustrated ambitions and no bitterness. He died comfortable, well loved and at peace. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him. Please know that his family have seen all of the tributes paid to him so far by post and online, and been deeply moved by them.
In lieu of flowers, donations are invited to Macmillan Cancer Support, who gave wonderful care to Andrew and his family. A Just Giving page in his memory has been set up. To donate search his name on the Just Giving website to contribute and read the many personal tributes.
Andrew, was a gentleman as well as good company. He was the best trainee solicitor I had helping me at our law firm. Now known as Squire Patton Boggs. I only discovered his untimely demise because I was trying to send another old friend to him to get some legal work done. I told my friend that Andrew would look after him. I'm sad that Andrew has left us way too soon. He will be missed by many people. Farewell old friend.

Andrew and I shared our terms as presidents and vice presidents of the Chamber - myself as Bradford Chamber President and Andrew as York & North Yorkshire Chamber President. I couldn't have wished for a more supportive, down to earth and relatable counterpart. We learnt the ropes together and rode out the Covid-19 business storm together. It was a bizarre time to be president during a period of lockdown, no in person events or meetings, but it was always so good and reassuring to know Andrew was there and experiencing the same challenges as we held such constantly evolving roles. As a colleague on the board of the West & North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce, Andrew was always a grounding and an objective presence with a great sense of humour. I remember with great fondness our Teams board meetings with Andrew beaming in, often with the children present in the background - a constant reminder of the family man behind the business personna. I'm still reeling from the shock of his passing and am so sorry that due to work commitments, I can't be at the funeral tomorrow. But I do send much love to Helen and the family and hope you can find comfort in knowing just how much of an impact Andrew had on so many lives. Suzanne x
Andrew was always so warm and welcoming to us. He had such charm and a gentle presence, that we were immediately comfortable. Through all the many tributes about Andrew we can see how much Andrew was held in such high esteem in the community. He did not live long but he made an impact and left his mark on the world.
