In loving memory of Henry 'Harry' Husband who sadly passed away on 19th October 2022.
Harry was born on 2nd July 1930 to Stephen and Eliza Jane Husband and was the second youngest of 16 children.
He spent his early life in Drake Street, Haverton Hill, Billingham, Teesside.
Harry had an 'exciting' wartime childhood dodging the bombs dropped to destroy the nearby ICI works at Billingham and Teeside docks. For an interesting account see 'The Bombing of Stockton 1940-43' at www.heritage.stockton.gov.uk
His first job straight from school was working for ICI as an office boy. He then left to work on the railways as an apprentice signalman.
Harry did his national service with the Royal Engineers based in Germany working at Hamburg Docks supervising local workers unloading/loading ships. During his time there Harry, by his own admission, played almost as much football as he did supervising the post war effort! He regularly played for his division in regional competitions.
In 1951, upon demob, he moved to Watchet, Somerset at the suggestion of his eldest brother Thomas Johnstone who lived there with his wife Alice.
Harry worked at Wansbrough Paper Mill, Watchet for nearly 20 years doing a variety of jobs.
In 1972 he joined Hinkley Point Power Station as a storeman until he retired in 1992.
Throughout his working life he lived for sport, playing football for Watchet Town FC, tennis and later on in life bowls (at Williton Bowling Club) and golf which was his real passion.
Upon retirement Harry was a very active member of Minehead Golf Club regularly playing up to three rounds a week well into his late 80s.
Sadly all those years of active sport finally caught up with him and his last two or three years of life became very difficult. Replacement hips and bad knees took their toll and he became less and less mobile. He also developed vascular dementia and Alzheimer's.
Harry never married but was dearly loved by both his 'Southern' and 'Northern' based families.
A celebration of Harry's life will be held at Taunton Crematorium, Wellington Road, Taunton, TA1 5NE at 3pm and afterwards at Sheppy's Cider Farm, Three Bridges, Bradford-on-Tone, Taunton, TA4 1ER.
