We are sad to announce that our dear dad, Robert Balaam, sadly passed away on 13th October 2022 at the grand old age of 85 years. He was astonished when he reached that age, but always reflected on a long and happy life. For those who knew him well, you will know what a kind and generous hearted husband, dad, grandad, great grandad and friend he was.
Known to all as Bob, he grew up in the South London area and after his National Service, followed his father into the hairdressing trade. He met our mum, Peggy, when she was just 17 yrs and he was 21 yrs and he never looked back, enjoying life to the full!
Samantha and Carole-Ann were born in the years following their marriage in 1961 and life for our family was good. Bob worked hard in his 2 salons in Sutton and Cheam, but always made time to enjoy time with his family. At 40 they were up for a change and new challenge, so we all packed off to North Devon where mum & dad bought a pub! With that came their first dog, bought to keep Carole-Ann company whilst they worked. From then on Bob's life, was hardly without a dog.
Sadly dreams and ambitions were crushed when Peggy become ill with MS. Bob cared for her patiently and lovingly, ever devoted. He ensured that despite her deteriorating health, they would have the best possible life and they continued to travel as much as they were able.
Bob carried on travelling when Peggy was gone, and the memories of all the places he had seen and explored were dear to him.
Bob became a grandfather over 37 years ago, and he continued to throw himself into that role until the end - earlier this year his youngest great grandchild, Zara, was cutting his hair for him....perhaps she will follow in his footsteps!
Bob loved nothing more than to be surrounded by his family, friends and dogs. He had an enormous heart, an easy going and patient nature, a ferocious interest in the world and loved science fiction, jazz, musicals and life. His glass was always half full! Cheers Bob.
