Dr Zita Subasinghe (23 Aug 1940 - 5 Oct 2022)
Funeral Director
A LIFE WELL SPENT !
In loving memory of Dr Zita Augusta Suranganie Subasinghe who sadly passed away on 5th October 2022.
She battled valiantly with metastatic cancer for 16 months and remained happy and content with the life she had led. She was as ever kind and generous to others even during the darkest days of her illness preferring to focus on the needs of the family rather than her own predicament.
She was the best patient you could hope for to her doctors and carers and she never complained as her illness progressed making her more and more disabled as time went on.
She continued to fill her time with creative pursuits such as her poetry book "Poetry in my Life" which was published in August this year. She played the piano up to the point when she was physically unable to do so. As ever her grandchildren Riyan and Kyan continued to be a source of joy and hope for her even when she felt very ill.
She attended family functions including birthdays, baptisms and the highlight of the wedding of her daughter Nisha to Mark in May 2022. We were able to take her on a few trips around England and while she could have easily just stayed at home she made all the effort to participate in the family gatherings that we organised.
Mum always felt that she had had a great life and would always remind us of this and how proud she was of her family. She was pragmatic about her terminal illness and would tell us that she wanted us to live our lives and not grieve for her. She told us that she was satisfied with her accomplishments and could not want for more.
She leaves behind a legacy which we are very proud of. From her early days as one of 13 children in a humble but dynamic family in Sri Lanka to moving to the UK in the 60s to further her professional career and give both her and her extended family a better life. She was the trailblazer in our family and was ably supported by her husband Joe.
Her achievements in her work life as a renowned Ophthalmologist who brought laser eye surgery to Sri Lanka and her later exploits as a specialist paediatric squint surgeon in Southend hospital in the UK are very noteworthy. She was loved by her patients who recognised that not only was she good at her job but also that she really cared for them as people. Following the Boxing day Tsunami she and her husband raised money for the people of Sri Lanka but rather than stop there they also went to the devastated towns in the south of the country to conduct free eye clinics and hand out spectacles to poor people who had lost everything.
Her hobbies of piano playing, painting, sewing, writing, french and poetry made for a very rounded person and when retirement came she was never lost for something to do. Her creativity continued till her final days and her last poem was written just a month before she passed. She would never brag or boast but preferred to work quietly in the background while others admired her accomplishments.
These accolades however were less important to her than the need to be kind and generous to others and she was always there to help and support those who came to her with problems.
Her charitable work and her concern for others less fortunate than herself is what people will remember the most. She was a humane individual who understood what was important in life and never yearned for material things leading a simple and yet very content existence.
Her journey through life was supported by her soulmate Joe (Bubby) who was a valiant partner by her side at all times and in the last year of her illness her faithful and devoted companion till the very end. They were a team to aspire to for those watching on.
As her family left behind we will do out best to preserve her memory and continue to live our lives with the same kindness, determination and courage that she showed in her lifetime.
Please celebrate her life by leaving a few words or lighting a candle on this page.
She was very happy to fundraise for Cancer Research UK and if you would like to make a small donation please follow the link to her JustGiving page. If you would like a copy of her poetry book we will be happy to send you it via email.
