Martin and I have known Alf for over 30 years through our mutual love of trains. Many happy memories of the Brean Sands weeks in the 1990s when he would often have us in fits of laughter at his tales of life on the footplate in the regular days of full size steam on the railways. He was a constant attendee on these meets over many years.
In his last few years driving for Virgin Trains, one Saturday he took Martin and I in the cab with him of a 125, passenger hauling to Birmingham.
We cannot tell you how much he was loved and liked by his many, many friends in the world of trains and model engineering, and doubtless by everyone, everywhere he went.
We have lost one of the best, one who has left us all with happy memories.
He will be much missed and fondly remembered.
We will be paying our respects tomorrow at his funeral, not just from ourselves, but for the many who can’t get there tomorrow to do the same.
Farewell, old friend.
