In loving memory of Edward Coates who sadly passed away on 8th July 2022

Eddie passed away in hospital less than one month after the passing of his dear wife, Jennifer Coates.

Jennie had been battling cancer for just over 3 years, Eddie had been struggling with heart & kidney problems for many years.
These health issues eventually forced Eddie into reluctant retirement at the age of 69 whilst still on the waiting list for a kidney transplant.
This was undoubtedly both a mental & physical struggle for Eddie, ever only knowing work as being both his social & professional stimulant.

Eddie served over 22 years in the Army Catering Corps, had almost traveled the globe in this time, much of which with his loving family in tow.
He was attached to numerous regiments over those years. Including two postings with the Black Watch.

It was whilst serving with the Black Watch he developed his love for Military Marching Bands, & an even greater love for the sound & music of Bagpipers.

Eddie was an old school military gentleman full of pride, honour, duty & integrity.
He was at his most happiest when catering, & even happier when teaching his long earned skills to other budding chef’s.
He loved nothing more than to help those who sought to help themselves.

The only thing to surpass his pleasure of the forces, work & catering was the personal enjoyment he received when in the presence of his loving family & grandchildren.

If you wish to pay your respects with us on Thursday 29th, you are all welcome by his family to do so at Beehive Orchid Cemetery - 1:30pm.

If you are unable to attend, please consider leaving a heartfelt comment or even a donation to the charity below.

Thank you!

Eddie Jnr & Gemma xx

I first met Eddie when he came to work in Colchester Officers’ Mess. Eddie was such a kind-hearted genuine man, and was one of the most likeable people I knew.
He was always so supportive of me and I will forever be grateful for all the laughs we shared at work.

My sincere condolences to all of his family at this truly sad time. RIP Eddie, I will miss you so much.

I first met Eddie in 2014 when I worked in the PFI contract in Colchester, he was a great team player, a real character a brilliant chef (and not a bad taxi driver) who was always there to support his colleagues and I am saddened to hear of his passing. Sincere condolences go out to his family at this sad time. RIP Eddie it was a pleasure knowing you!

  • Met Eddie in Colchester at 8Fd/42 Ord in the late 80's which was his last posting. A great guy, great boss and fellow North Easterner. Chatted with him on Messenger only weeks before his passing and saddened that I didn't have the opportunity to meet up with him again. Rest in peace mate. Honour and a privilege.
