As a student at York School of Law I found Me B (as we knew him) to be the most affable, generous, entertaining and personable landlord a student could ever hope to have! He created golden memories of our year in York and I know that we were not alone in finding him thus.
As a long term friend of the Grayson family I’ve had the pleasure of seeing Darrell in more recent years and was struck once again by his charm and conversation. He is such a loss.

A Great teacher and mentor who also worked in our boarding house. We used to help restore his garden on a Sunday. He could always see the best In students.

What an inspirational teacher Darrell Buttery was at Nunthorpe. A dry sense of humour and a genuine love of the English language. I will never forget the architecture classes (or the visits to Duncombe Park and Queen Margaret’s girls schools he arranged!) and he has left York an incredible legacy in terms of his work on behalf of the Civic Trust and his books. I was in fact the first person to purchase one such book which Darrell inscribed with a personal message.

I was privileged to meet Darrell again when our eldest son joined the sixth form at Pocklington and amazed at his continued presence at many sporting events in support of the school.

It was befitting that Darrell chose to live in a house of great history and character on Tadcaster Road. I recall it even had a Roman coffin in the garden!

A gentleman scholar in every sense.

Mr Buttery was a great teacher and a lovely man. I was a bit of a misfit at Nunthorpe and I’ll always recall Mr Buttery seeing me looking at a book in a York bookshop one day, secretly buying it for me and presenting it to me outside the shop. A lovely gesture. I wrote Mr Buttery a card when I heard about his terminal illness, recited my story to him and got a lovely card back in return from him. I am certain I was one of many ex-NGS pupils who’s warm words will have given Mr Buttery great joy in his last months. I always look up when walking down the Shambles and always think of Mr Buttery’s local history classes when I do :) RIP
