Robert Hope Sussex: 20 September 1932 – 22 June 2022.
Robert, known as Bob, was born in Troedyrhiw in 1932. Throughout his school days Bob excelled at sport; he represented the Welsh Schoolboys football team and was signed by Merthyr Town FC at age 17.
After completing National Service, he was delighted to gain a place at the prestigious Loughborough College where he achieved first class honours and college colours for Football, Rugby and Athletics. In 2009 he returned to Loughborough aged 78 having been invited to receive an honorary degree. It was one of his proudest moments and he was thrilled to see photographs of his sporting achievements, including representing the Great Britain University Athletic squad, still on the walls.
He was Welsh national champion for triple jump two years in a row and represented Wales in triple jump, long jump and high jump at multiple international competitions. In addition he was a member of the Welsh squad for the 1958 Empire and Commonwealth games at Cardiff.
A distinguished career was to follow. At only 35 he was appointed to the position of PE inspector, initially for Wiltshire, followed by SE Essex where he settled with his family. Bob was the pioneer of a pupil centred approach to teaching which was adopted nationwide. His encouragement of creativity and independent thinking was an inspiration, not only for his pupils, but for his children and grand children. His passion for teaching and sport continued throughout his life and he remained a County Inspector until his retirement, a job he loved and excelled in.
He leaves behind wife Eileen, 4 children, 9 grand children and 3 great grand children.
