Marian Haley (8 Jul 1933 - 18 Jun 2022)

Marian Pauline Green was born on 8th July 1933 at Lambeth Nursing Home, she was the second child of Fredrick and Violet Green. The family lived in Herne Hill before they moved to Middleton Road, Carshalton.

At the start of the war in 1939, both her parents were doing essential war work which meant they could not look after their children so Marian and her brother Cecil were evacuated to their Aunt Zillah and her family in Feltham.
During this time Marian went to school, initially at Cardinal Road Infants school, then Hanworth Road Junior School. At the age of 11 she went to Longford Girls School. Outside of school Marian attended a dance school where she learned Stage and Tap dancing.

At the end of the war in 1945, Marian moved back to Carshalton and attended an Art School. Her first job was as an apprentice seamstress, working for Norman Hartnell, dress maker for the royal family. Marian had many jobs over the years, she was working as a telephonist for the Post Office at the time of her marriage.

Marian married Ronald Haley on 13th September 1952 at the church of St Peter in Carshalton, they had a joint wedding with Marian’s brother Cecil and his wife Marion.

Marian and Ron moved to Slade Green in Kent where Marian worked as a tracer. In May 1960 their first son, Terry was born. The family moved to Ancaster Crescent in New Malden where Deborah was born in 1962. Their third child Phillip was born in 1966 and shortly following his birth they moved to Trelawne Drive in Cranleigh.
Whilst living in Trelawne Drive Marian had 2 different jobs, working on an Egg farm and the as a school cook at Woolpit School in Ewhurst.

Ron and Marian bought a newsagent shop in 1973 and they ran the business together for many years.When they retired from the Newsagent business they moved to Ewhurst, where, aside from a short time providing some childcare for a local family, Marian retired.
After several years in Ewhurst and as years advanced they moved to Petworth where they enjoyed many happy years until 2008 when Terry succumbed to cancer at the age of 47.

In 2010 Marian became a grandmother with the birth of Thomas.

Marian developed dementia and was officially diagnosed in 2013. She remained at home being cared for by Ron until 2015 when she moved into Longfield Manor Care Home in Billingshurst where she remained for the rest of her life.

Marian was creative especially with needlework and dressmaking. She made her own and Deborah's wedding dresses along with bridesmaid’s outfits and several outfits she would wear to the dinner dances she and Ron went to. While living in Petworth Marian joined a quilting group and learnt new techniques producing decorations, cushions and quilts.
Marian enjoyed sport she was a keen player for Cranleigh Stoolball. She was a member of a successful team winning several trophies. Marian also played badminton and played mixed and ladies doubles in local leagues.
Marian was always supportive of her family encouraging them in their various pursuits and always enjoyed having her family around her.
In her final years dementia robbed Marian of the memories of her wonderful life but we will always remember her as a fun, vibrant woman who enjoyed life and lived it to the full.
