Percy John Cooper (5 Mar 1925 - 23 May 2022)
Funeral Director
In loving memory of Percy John Cooper who sadly passed away on 23rd May 2022, aged 97 years.
Percy was born in Chatham Kent in March 1925, and worked in a brickworks from the age of 15, he then became a Butchers Boy, delivering meat by pedal cycle around the Medway area, before becoming a projectionist at the Palace Theatre in Gillingham. He was called up during the war and saw active service on various ships in HM Navy, primarily HMS Delhi. After the war was was recruited by what is now known as GCHQ, whom he served with distinction in both the UK and abroad until his retirement in 1986.
Percy married his sweetheart Bunty in 1951 and they remained happily married until her death in 2017.
Percy and Bunty relocated to Somerset in the late 1950's due to Percy's work commitments and Percy remained there until 2019, when failing health made it sensible to move back to his roots in Kent to be nearer his remaining family and to a place where he could be looked after.
Percy's last years have been as a resident at a Royal Naval Benevolent Fund premises, Pembroke House in Gillingham, where he was able to share his memories of his Navy days with fellow veterans and the staff. He was honoured to have been able to represent the Royal Navy Benevolent Fund, at last years Remembrance day parade at the Cenotaph in London, and receive a salute from The Duke of Cambridge.
Percy will be sadly missed and always remembered.
