In memory of Marjorie, one of the founder members of Wollaton WI
Marjorie Scarborough (4 Sep 1931 - 17 May 2022)
Funeral Director
In loving memory of Marjorie Scarborough who sadly passed away on 17th May 2022.
Marjorie was born Marjorie Johnson, Sept 4th 1931 (Ashbourne), the youngest of 3 children, some 8 and 12 years younger than her two brothers, Eric and Ron.
Marjorie’s family was from Nottingham and she fondly remembered visiting Granny’s ‘tuck’ shop in Arkwright street. Her childhood was spent in the Nottingham and Ashbourne areas, and she was evacuated to Darley Moor during WW2 before returning to Glenmore Road, West Bridgford, attending Muster’s Road Secondary school.
Marjorie was an active member of Bottesford Youth Group and Tennis clubs. It was on a youth trip that she met her future husband, Neville Scarborough, and they married in 1958. They moved into Brendon road, Wollaton, that year; both skilled crafters, they moulded every nook and cranny to their tastes, including a lush garden which they took great pride in.
Marjorie frequently went back to Bottesford, always knowing where to take her nieces (Eric’s daughters) to the best bluebell woods, trips to Skegness and even bravely taking the two teenage girls to their beloved Interlaken, Switzerland in 1968. She also often entertained her two nephews, Ron’s two boys, who would also make frequent visits from London as their father was an ardent Forest fan.
The Norfolk Broads were a favoured destination in later years, along with Bournemouth and the south for its warmth. Marjorie volunteered for, then worked for, the local Nottingham Scouts organisation, and was a secretary at Nottingham University for many years. After Neville died in 2009, Marjorie continued to enjoy trips around the UK, visiting garden centres and carried on with her crafting and local WI activities, where she was a member for 25 years.
Being active around the house and garden kept Marjorie in good physical health, despite being treated for cancer since 2017. She was admitted to hospital at the end of March with breathing difficulties and passed away peacefully 6 weeks later.
