Barbara was born in 1938 in York. She lived in York with her Mum Olive and her dad Eric. As a young child she found her faith in God attending St Paul’s church in York. From an early age Barbara would love to perform practising her lines at home so when in the nativity plays there, all could hear her. Barbara loved to sing and dance, learning to play the piano and became an impressive ballet dancer in her youth. She attended Queen Anne’s Grammar School where she worked hard and excelled in all she did. Olive and Eric were immensely proud of their daughter Barbara.
On leaving school Barbara worked at The Church of England Home in Harrogate looking after young children under five. She then became an auxiliary nurse in Leeds. This is where Barbara met Harry whom she married in 1961 at St Paul’s Church in York. Harry and Barbara were devoted to one another and immensely happy and they embarked on their life together. David her son was born in 1962 and Jackie her daughter in 1964. Harry was a devoted Dad and wonderful husband to Barbara. They lived together in Kippax before moving to Fulford in York.
Sadly, Harry became ill and passed away in 1971 when David was eight and Jackie six. Barbara devoted her life to raising her children with the help of wonderful family, neighbours and friends.
Her faith in God grew and she with her children attended St Michael Le Belfrey in York. In Barbara’s words, here she did mountains of washing up as she embedded her life into the life of the church. Her beautiful voice allowed her to join the choir there.
Memories of Barbara are wonderful, she loved days out with her children and would never miss an opportunity to catch the sun in the days when the sun shone so brightly through the summer months.
David and Jackie grew up and left home to embark on their own adventures; university, getting married and having children of their own. Barbara moved her life to Scarborough with her dad Eric after her Mum Olive had passed away. She loved Scarborough and had a newfound freedom as her children had flown her nest. She joined the Mother’s Union and visited Rome a place she had dreamed always of seeing. She cared for Eric devotedly and would push him in his wheelchair through the beautiful town of Scarborough each day.
Barbara was a wonderful Nana to her four Grandchildren, Claire, Michael, Sean, and Kar Lai. In her later life she loved to see and hear about the exciting events in their lives. Her 80th Birthday Party brought all the generations within her family together and remains a most special memory.
Barbara was beautiful, kind, friendly, caring and loved.
Rest in peace beautiful Barbara.
