In loving memory of Doris Elsie McQuiggan, known to many of us simply as Elsie, who died peacefully on 1st April 2022 in The Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH), Farnborough in Kent. Mum had a fall at home just before Christmas and spent the following weeks catching COVID twice and recovering, transferring across seven wards and three hospitals.

Mum will be remembered by us all for her kindness and humility, for her charity and voluntary work in many countries. She served her country on many Foreign Office postings around the world where she fully supported her husband John McQuiggan MBE. Posted to Australia as a very young bride directly from her honeymoon, she learnt the role of a Diplomatic wife on the steam ship to Australia. She always brought happiness to children in posts including Pakistan, Australia, Nigeria, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and Zambia. She visited many countries, sometimes for a day and lived in many for three or four years. She had the ability to engage effortlessly with deaf children, the poor, freedom fighters, Ambassadors, Prime Ministers, Foreign Secretaries, Presidents and then relate in an instant to the ladies on the street market stalls. Always the perfect hostess, she could organise garden parties, formal dinners and receptions, at a moments notice, yet still care for a leper or assist the Holy Sisters and Fathers. She always had a smile and put smiles on countless faces, leaving memories and legacies without making a fuss.

She was a Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother not only to us but we shared her with thousands of others who came into contact with her.

Mum we love you and miss you.

Elsie was my Aunt and I am the only niece she had. To me, she was always Aunty Elsie, even though I am a pensioner myself now I couldn’t stop calling her that. She gave the VERY BEST HUGS in the whole world and I will miss those so much. She was always so happy to hear from you and see you no matter how she felt in herself. She never judged you and for that I loved her more than ever. I will miss you so much. Your were the last of that generation for me Aunty Elsie. Love you forever. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
