There was a severe lack of communication when it came to details of the funeral. We were not informed until the day of the funereal when the coffin turned up that it will not be opened in the chapel. In fact the day before I spoke with the funeral director - Criag - who said that I would be able to see him in the chapel. The planners - Chanelle and Amy - also told me during the planning that the coffin would be open in the chapel for 5 minutes out of 30 minutes, which we agreed to. As you can imagine, this was very distressing as this would have been many people's last chance to see my husband before he was buried. We were told on the day that the council doesn't allow it, but in the 'Cemetery & Crematorium Rules & Regulations' booklet at point 18 it says "Coffins may be opened in the chapel during the service at the discretion of the Superintendent and Registrar". I spoke to the Superintendent and Registrar from the cemetery and he confirmed this, saying it's not against council policy, they just need to be informed beforehand by the funeral director and the ceremony needs to be at least an hour. The latter was definitely not told to me during the planning of the ceremony. Would be really mindful with using this funeral service, I would not use agian.

Excellent service! Very impressed with the presentation of the funeral arrangements from start to finish. The vicar was outstanding and carried out his duty with a great deal of sympathy  and compassion. Well done. Would recommend your services to any one who is interested and looking for  a funeral director.

Funeral arranged well, within our budget, and everything as we wanted. Staff helpful and friendly. But communication very poor. Often not available by telephone, recorded messages only. They haven't answered some of my emails. I support the Co-op, my bank account, travel and home insurance. But they need to improve this one.

Jodie was most helpful and thorough in organising the funeral, and Jacqueline did a wonderful job on the day -I felt very much at ease knowing they were managing everything meticulously.

In the first instance I wanted to arrange my mother's funeral at my local branch in Gray's Essex, at first, I was told this was possible then at a later date I was told the arrangements had to made at the branch in Hackney, so I had to travel over to Hackney, at this sensitive time I could have done without all of this toing and froing. Jodie at the Hackney branch then informed me when I arrived at the Hackney branch that in fact the Gray's branch could have made the arrangements. It is also advertised on the company paperwork that any branch can make funeral arrangements, so perhaps some staff training is in order to advise staff of the company rules.
I was told by Jodie at the Hackney branch that when they had mum in their care, and mum had been dressed and ready to be viewed I would be contacted, this never happened! I then contacted the Hackney branch by phone a week prior to the funeral and left a message asking if mum was in their care and if all was in place for mum's funeral on the 15th of November, and that I now felt it was too late to view mum, I never got a call back! However, the two ladies and gentlemen who actually took mum, me and my family to the crematorium were very respectful and restored some of my faith in this particular funeral directors. My mother family have used the same company for years; however, I will think twice before I ever use them again or recommend.

We were very happy with the arrangements for my mother's funeral, the service itself was very well presented by Alan and the management of the funeral on the day was excellent.

  • 1 Joan Mason 26th Sep 2022

From the very first contact, the service was awful. My son spoke to head office the day after my partner passed who promised to pass all the information to the local branch and that they would be in touch. After not receiving any calls, he called the branch who said they had no information from head office.
The poor service continued and it took many calls to get the ashes in time for a family gathering, despite giving plenty of notice of the date and being promised that the ashes would be returned on time

Leaving a poor review is not something I like to do or take lightly, but in this case, it is totally warranted, especially if it prevents a single person from experiencing what I had to go through with Hackney Funeralcare.

My initial call to them on May 25 went unanswered and I left a message. I phoned back the next day and was assured that my sister would be taken into their care. An appointment was set up for June 1 at 2 pm (which I explained to them was 6 am in Seattle). On June 1, I received a call at 3 am, asking me what time on June 6 our appointment was for. When I told them that it was for 2 pm London time BUT for TODAY, I was told that they couldn't do it because of the Queen's Jubilee Holidays (which were the next two days!) but could talk on June 6th.

When I phoned on June 14th to see why my sister had still not been taken into their care, they hung up on me. I called the Complaints Department then and got some action. The Hospice Hospital just a few blocks away had to call Hackney Funeralcare twice AFTER the time they said that they would pick up her body and had not done so.

On July 4th, when I contacted them to get information about the cremation as they hadn't sent me anything as they had promised, I heard someone in the background instruct the person to whom I was talking to say that the doctor's certificate had been incorrect - "wrong date" and that my sister had not yet been cremated.

In light of that, I followed up with hospice and found out that no issue had taken place and no request for another doctor's certificate.

On July 6th, I received a call from Hackney Funeralcare at 4:30 am (again, they knew of the 8 hour time difference!) to say that my sister would be cremated on July 11th, almost 7 weeks after contacting them. Not only was this distressing and infuriating every step of the way, but the lack of sympathy/empathy from the outset was totally missing. I certainly hope that no other family has to go through this EVER.

We were extremely happy with the service that was delivered. For such a sad time for us we were very pleased at how at how organised and the great care taken from the moment we were collected from home until we were dropped off at the wake. A beautiful service which recieved many complements from those attending.
